South Central Railway (SCR) has achieved a significant milestone by carrying close to 200 million originating passengers between April and December in the financial year 2023-24. During this period, SCR operated 4,267 special trains and added 5,028 extra coaches to express trains, resulting in revenue of ₹4,286 crore from passenger fares. The overall revenue for SCR reached a record high of ₹14,738 crore, surpassing the previous year’s revenue by ₹950 crore. Additionally, SCR generated revenue of ₹10,000 crore from transporting 100 metric tonnes of freight. The zone also made significant investments in infrastructure development, with a capital expenditure of ₹13,452 crore, the highest ever in its history for the first nine months of any financial year. This investment resulted in the creation of 11 km of new railway lines, 105 km of double lines, and 96 km of third line works. Another notable achievement for SCR was the successful electrification of almost 94% of its broad gauge rail network. The zone also focused on track renewal, completing 468 km of track renewal works during the period. Safety remained a top priority, with the elimination of 41 manned level crossings and the construction of 21 Road under Bridges (RUBs) and six Road over Bridges (ROBs). Prime Minister Modi himself inaugurated four ‘Vande Bharat’ express trains, 13 MMTS train services, and two passenger train services. Additionally, two pairs of express trains and one passenger train service were introduced, while 18 express trains and 20 MMTS suburban services were extended to new destinations. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) played a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of passengers, rescuing over 1,500 children and recovering ₹1.27 crore worth of railway property. In line with the government’s vision of transforming railway stations, SCR is undertaking the redevelopment of 119 stations at a cost of nearly ₹7,000 crore as part of the ‘Amrit Bharat Station Scheme’.
