The Tamil Nadu Rice Mill Owners’ Association has appealed to the State government to lower fixed electricity charges and peak hour charges to ensure the continued operation of rice mills in the state. The association’s president, K.S. Jagadeesan, submitted a memorandum to the Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development, Udhayanidhi Stalin, during his visit to Erode. The memorandum highlighted the negative impact of the recent changes made by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) in power tariffs. According to the memorandum, the monthly fixed charges up to 112 KW, previously set at ₹35 for a KW, have now been increased to ₹154 a KW. This sudden increase in charges has made it difficult for rice mills to compete with mills in other states, putting them at risk of closure.
Furthermore, the memorandum also raised concerns about the increase in peak hour charges by 15% from ₹7.65 a unit to ₹8.50 a unit. The association called for a complete withdrawal of these peak hour charges, citing their detrimental impact on the functioning of rice mills. The memorandum also highlighted the burden imposed on industries installing rooftop solar panels due to Tangedco’s imposition of networking charges of ₹1.54 per unit. The association demanded the government to remove these networking charges entirely, emphasizing their negative impact on industries and discouragement towards the installation of new panels.
Additionally, the association expressed concern about the 6% annual hike in power tariffs. This continuous increase in tariffs has discouraged industries and led to the closure of many units. The memorandum urged the government to withdraw this annual hike in power tariffs as well, to provide relief to industries and promote their continued operation.
In conclusion, the Tamil Nadu Rice Mill Owners’ Association is seeking immediate action from the State government to address the concerns regarding fixed electricity charges, peak hour charges, networking charges, and the annual hike in power tariffs. They believe that reducing these charges and providing necessary support will ensure the sustainable functioning of rice mills in Tamil Nadu.
