Two probe teams, one from West Bengal Police and the other from the National Commission for Women (NCW), visited Sandeshkhali in Kolkata following complaints from local women. The women allege land grab, physical assault, harassment, non-payment of dues, molestation, threats, and intimidation. However, no reports of rape or sexual abuse have been made. The police team, led by DIG CID Soma Das Mitra, received written complaints of land grab, assault, harassment, non-payment of dues, and two instances of molestation. The NCW team received complaints of threats and intimidation. The police have assured the women that strict action will be taken after thorough investigation. The women have been encouraged to come forward confidently and lodge complaints without any legal hassle. A resident shared her experience of being forcibly taken to Trinamool Congress’ office or farms of party leaders and being locked inside until the program was over. When they protested, they were assaulted by party henchmen. The women fear backlash, which may explain why there have been no complaints of sexual assault or sexual violence. Meanwhile, clashes between BJP supporters and the police erupted over the violence in Sandeshkhali.
