An umbrella body of church organizations in Assam, the Assam Christian Forum (ACF), has criticized Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his statement equating magical healing with proselytization. The ACF has also rejected demands by a Hindu group for removing Christian symbols from missionary schools across the state. The Chief Minister stated that the Assam Cabinet passed a resolution endorsing a bill to ban magical healing practices to curb evangelism. The ACF finds this statement misguided and misleading, asserting that healing is not synonymous with proselytization. They argue that it is a compassionate response to human suffering, regardless of religious affiliations. The ACF highlights that labeling prayer as magical healing oversimplifies the spiritual dimensions of faith and life. They also emphasize that invoking divine blessings is intrinsic to religious worship, irrespective of the place of worship. The forum states that the accusation against Christians undermines the constitutional protection of the right to practice one’s chosen religion, as guaranteed by Article 25 of the Constitution of India. The ACF expresses concern about threats to educational institutions and demands for the removal of Christian symbols by certain fringe elements. They reject these demands and call for action against those who pose a threat to civil society and infringe upon the rights provided by the Constitution of India. The ACF urges engaging in dialogue that promotes understanding and dispels misconceptions.
