Indian women’s hockey team chief coach Janneke Schopman’s future with the team is uncertain as her contract is unlikely to be extended past July. Schopman took over as the head coach of the team after the Tokyo Olympics. However, she has failed to produce the desired results, which includes the team’s failure to qualify for the Paris Olympics. Schopman’s best results with the team include the bronze medals at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and the 2023 Asian Games in China. But apart from these achievements, she has not been able to guide the team to further success. The team’s failure to win the gold medal at the Asian Games, which would have secured their qualification for the Paris Olympics, is a major setback. Additionally, the team had another opportunity to secure their berth at the Paris Olympics through the Olympic Qualifiers in Ranchi earlier this year, but they faltered again and lost to Japan in the bronze medal play-off. Schopman’s relationship with Hockey India secretary general Bholanath Singh also soured after the team’s failure to qualify for the Paris Olympics through the Asian Games. The situation worsened after Schopman’s recent comments in the media following a game against the USA in the FIH Pro League, where she expressed her dissatisfaction with the treatment and support from certain quarters of the national federation during her tenure. Schopman, who is an Olympic gold medallist herself, also highlighted the differential treatment between the women’s and men’s teams. However, Hockey India denied these allegations and stated that she was provided with everything she requested. Sources suggest that Schopman is seeking a higher salary equivalent to that of the men’s team chief coach, Craig Fulton, and this might be the underlying reason for her recent outburst. According to the source, results are crucial in determining whether a higher salary can be justified, and Schopman’s recent performance with the team does not work in her favor. Schopman’s next assignment with the Indian women’s team is the European leg of the FIH Pro League in May.
