Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann has declared a financial aid of Rs 1 crore for the family of Shubhakaran Singh, who lost his life during the ongoing farmers’ protest at Khanauri border. The announcement also includes a government job for Shubhakaran Singh’s younger sister, with the assurance of appropriate legal action against the responsible individuals.
The announcement follows the death of a farmer at Khanauri Border crossing in Sangrur district, Punjab.
Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait declared a ‘Black Friday’ protest to be observed by the protesting farmers, led by the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), in response to the death.
Addressing concerns over potential damage during the protests, Haryana Police in Ambala District said that any harm to government and private property will be compensated by attaching protestors’ property and seizing their bank accounts.
Union Minister Arjun Munda emphasized the Central Government’s dedication to resolving issues through dialogue and expressed the government’s commitment to the welfare of the farmers. The agriculture ministry is actively addressing concerns raised by farmers’ associations, union minister said. The ongoing farmers’ agitation has prompted the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) to call for inclusive dialogue involving stakeholders across the agricultural sector. The protesters, stationed at the Shambhu border near Ambala since February 13, have seen clashes resulting in injuries to several farmers and police personnel.
