Hundreds of Manipur police commandos from four districts staged an arms-down protest, symbolically denouncing the abduction and assault on an additional SP and indiscriminate firing by unidentified gunmen. The protest, held in Imphal, aimed to urge authorities to take decisive action against the attackers. The protesters, including commandos from Imphal West, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur districts, gathered at their respective bases. Discussions between senior police officers and the protesting commandos were held. The incident that triggered the protest occurred when around 200 armed miscreants attacked the residence of Imphal West district additional SP Moirangthem Amit Singh. The officer and one of his escorts were abducted but later rescued and admitted to Raj Medicity for treatment. Additional forces were promptly deployed, leading to a crossfire where two civilians sustained bullet wounds. The injured officer was visited by Chief Minister N Biren Singh at a private hospital. In another development, Manipur CM N Biren Singh presented a vote-on-account, suspending a full budget until the Union budget is passed later this year. He acknowledged the risk of a tax loss of about Rs 800 crore during the current year due to the ongoing unrest in the state. This decision was taken to ensure better coordination with the central government, considering the state’s fiscal capacity has been affected by the continuing strife.
