Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday urgently called on Western nations to provide additional air defence systems following a series of Russian missile, drone, and artillery attacks resulting in the deaths of at least ten individuals. The city of Odesa witnessed a devastating drone strike, causing the collapse of a nine-storey building and claiming the lives of seven people, including a three-month-old baby and a two-year-old child. Separate shelling attacks in the Kharkiv, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions caused three more casualties. Zelenskyy expressed his concern over Russia’s deliberate targeting of civilians and stressed the need for enhanced air defences to protect Ukrainians from this ongoing threat. As Ukraine faces major challenges in the ongoing war, including delayed aid from the United States Congress, Russia has seized the opportunity to advance its forces. The Ukrainian air force reported that falling debris from Russian drones, which had been shot down, caused damage to residential buildings in Odesa and Kharkiv. It is worth mentioning that Ukraine retaliated by launching its own drone attack, damaging a residential building in Saint Petersburg, Russia. While the situation at the front remains difficult, Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky affirmed that it remained under control. In recent months, Ukraine has targeted Russian oil facilities as a response to Moscow’s attacks on Ukraine’s power grid. Meanwhile, Russia has expressed anger over a leaked confidential conversation among German army officers discussing missile strikes on Crimea, which Chancellor Olaf Scholz promised to investigate. The incident has strained relations between Russia and Ukraine’s European allies, with Moscow accusing them of seeking a ‘strategic defeat’ on the battlefield.
