Australia will consult with media organisations after Meta Platforms said it would wind down the Facebook News tab from April. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed the government’s commitment to exploring all available options to support journalism and ensure journalists are remunerated for their work. The move comes after Australia passed a pioneering legislation in 2021 to mandate digital companies to pay local publishers for news content, resulting in a temporary news blackout. Meta has already deprecated the Facebook News tab in the US, UK, Germany, and France.
