Several businesses in India have started to send promotional messages on WhatsApp, leading to cluttered inboxes for users. In response, the government is taking measures to tighten rules and prevent companies from spamming users. Many businesses are now using WhatsApp for communication, including ticket confirmations, transaction details, promotions, and more, replacing their reliance on SMS. WhatsApp now gives users control over who can chat with them, and businesses can’t have ongoing conversations with users unless they have opted in. Users have the option to block businesses, report violations of WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy, or continue chatting. Some businesses may offer an opt-out option for marketing messages, while blocking a business also blocks the ability to send messages to them.
