Reliance Jio Urges Government to Ensure Adequate Spectrum for Telcos

Telecom market leader Reliance Jio has urged the government and the industry regulator to ensure that carriers have adequate airwave holdings, as the amount of spectrum they hold in India is the lowest per subscriber globally. Jio’s President, Mathew Oommen, addressed delegates at the ETTelecom 5G | 6G Congress 2024 and emphasized the need for India to expedite its spectrum pipeline. Oommen called on regulators and policymakers to prevent infrastructure destruction and penalize those responsible. He highlighted that the telecom industry is capital-intensive and investments in telecom and assets should be protected. Oommen also mentioned that Jio has deployed over 1.1 million 5G cells in just 11 months and is contributing to R&D work in the field of 6G. Jio Platforms, the parent company of Jio, is actively working on creating a 6G Core. Oommen further mentioned Jio’s efforts in creating digital and connectivity infrastructure, as well as next-generation compute infrastructure.
