Congress, which had successfully contested in Trichy constituency in the 2019 elections, has lost the constituency to its alliance partner MDMK in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. However, Congress has been allotted Tirunelveli, Cuddalore, and Mayiladuthurai constituencies instead of Theni, Arani, and Trichy. Congress was allotted nine constituencies in Tamil Nadu and the lone seat of Puducherry in the DMK alliance.

Both DMK and Congress have signed an agreement for the nine constituencies in which Congress is set to contest. The nine constituencies allocated to the Congress in Tamil Nadu are Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Sivaganga, Tirunelveli, Krishnagiri, Karur, Virudhunagar, and Kanyakumari. Among these, four constituencies are in southern districts.

In the 2019 elections, Congress contested in nine constituencies and lost in one constituency, Theni, to AIADMK. This time, Congress has been allocated the Tirunelveli constituency to avoid defeat in Theni. Similarly, as the MDMK demanded the Trichy constituency, Congress was allotted the Mayiladuthurai constituency. Regarding the Arani constituency, Congress has contested twice and the DMK once, in 2014. Due to anti-incumbency in the constituency against the incumbent MP M K Vishnu Prasad, Congress has been allocated the Cuddalore constituency.

After the allocation of the constituencies, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K Selvaperunthagai stated that the process for obtaining the application for contesting in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and the Vilavancode by-poll began on Monday. He urged interested Congress members to submit their applications at the Congress headquarters in Chennai.

Meanwhile, MDMK founder Vaiko, while speaking to reporters at the DMK headquarters after striking the deal, announced that the candidate for Trichy would be revealed in the evening.
