DGCA slaps Rs 80 lakh fine on Air India for violating crew duty time rules

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has fined Air India Rs 80 lakh for violating crew duty time rules. The violations pertain to regulations related to flight duty time limitations (FDTL) and fatigue management system (FMS) of the flight crew. Following a spot audit conducted in January, DGCA found several violations, such as allowing both pilots to operate a flight above the age of 60. The audit also revealed deficient rest periods given to the flight crew before and after ultra-long range flights and during layovers. The airline was also found to have exceeded duty periods, marked wrong training records, and had overlapping duties. DGCA issued a show-cause notice to Air India on March 1, which was deemed unsatisfactory. The spot audit was conducted as a step towards ensuring a high level of safety in aviation. Air India has faced multiple fines from the regulator in the past one-and-a-half years for various lapses in compliance.
