The Indian Premier League (IPL) has set new records for television and streaming viewership on its opening day. Star Sports and JioCinema, the official broadcaster and streaming partner respectively, witnessed a surge in viewership. Chennai Super Kings defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore in the first match, which was preceded by a star-studded opening ceremony. According to Disney Star, the official broadcaster, the IPL opening day attracted 168 million unique TV viewers and generated a watch time of 12.76 billion minutes, the highest ever for the tournament’s opening day. The peak TV concurrency for the opening day was also a record-breaking 61 million viewers. JioCinema, the official streaming partner, reported a 51% increase in viewers compared to the previous edition, with 113 million viewers logging on to its platform. The opening day also saw JioCinema achieve 590 million video views and 6.6 billion minutes of watch time. The success of the IPL’s opening day reflects the unmatched popularity of live cricket and the growing trend of digital consumption in sports.
