The Atal Tunnel, also known as the Rohtang Tunnel in Himachal Pradesh, received fresh snowfall on March 30. The Atal Tunnel, an engineering marvel in the Himalayas, is a highway tunnel constructed under the Rohtang Pass in the eastern Pir Panjal range. The snowfall disrupted traffic, closing the north and south entrances of the tunnel on the Manali-Leh highway. This caused traffic jams in the direction of Keylong in Lahaul and the Spiti district north of the Solang valley near Manali. Tourists from Manali flocked to the Solang valley to enjoy snow activities. However, the police restricted traffic flow beyond the Solang valley towards Keylong for public safety. The snowfall also affected other parts of the region, with the higher reaches of Lahaul and Spiti, Mandi, and Kullu districts experiencing fresh snowfall. In addition, mild snowfall continued in the tribal areas of Himachal Pradesh while widespread rains lashed the middle and low hills. The local Meteorological Office predicted more wet weather in the state until April 6, with Gondla in Lahaul and Spiti district receiving 22 cm of snow. As a result of the inclement weather, over 170 roads, including four National Highways, have been closed for vehicular traffic in the state. The majority of these roads are in difficult terrain in Lahaul and Spiti, with 157 roads yet to be opened. The snowfall in the region has attracted a large number of tourists, particularly to the Solang valley, where they can enjoy various snow activities. However, authorities are taking precautions to ensure public safety in these areas. The pictures of the snow-covered Atal Tunnel and the surrounding regions provide a visual representation of the impact of the snowfall on the beautiful state of Himachal Pradesh.
