Mumbai opener Bhupen Lalwani, who finished as the leading run-scorer in Mumbai’s successful Ranji Trophy campaign in the 2023-24 season, revealed the inspiration behind his cricket journey. Lalwani attributed his love for the sport to watching India’s swashbuckling opening batsman Virender Sehwag. He mentioned that he would get upset and refuse to eat when Sehwag got out. Lalwani specifically mentioned Sehwag’s triple century against South Africa in 2008 as a special knock that he has watched over 100 times, which boosts his confidence when he is feeling down. Lalwani shared these sentiments at an event organized by the ASK Foundation24, a prominent Mumbai-based NGO, where he was felicitated for his achievements. As a token of appreciation for the continuous support provided by the NGO throughout his journey, Lalwani donated Rs 1 lakh.

While Lalwani is not currently participating in the ongoing IPL, he expressed his hope of representing the Mumbai Indians, his favorite team, in the future. He emphasized that the IPL is a significant platform and praised all the teams in the league. Lalwani and his family have been ardent Mumbai Indians fans since the inception of the IPL, and he believes that playing for the team would be a dream come true. Lalwani also discussed the supportive atmosphere within the Mumbai team during the Ranji Trophy campaign. He credited the senior players for backing the youngsters and creating a welcoming environment where newcomers like him never felt out of place. Lalwani appreciated the guidance and mentorship provided by the senior players, who treated the younger players like regulars and younger brothers.

The felicitation event was attended by BCCI treasurer Ashish Shelar, who is also the president of BJP Mumbai. Shelar commended Lalwani for his outstanding performance and predicted a bright future for the young cricketer. He highlighted Lalwani’s mental toughness and expressed confidence that it would propel him to great heights in his career. Shelar was present at the Wankhede Stadium to witness Mumbai’s victory in the Ranji Trophy after a gap of more than eight years. He was thrilled with the team’s success and emphasized that Mumbai has always been a stronghold of cricket in India, contributing greatly to the sport’s development.

Overall, Lalwani’s dedication to cricket, inspired by Virender Sehwag, and his desire to represent the Mumbai Indians in the IPL encapsulate his passion for the game. Along with his exceptional performances on the field, Lalwani’s humility and commitment to giving back to society through his donation to the ASK Foundation24 showcase his character and gratitude for the support he has received throughout his journey.
