Mumbai Indians secured their first win of the season by defeating Delhi Capitals by 29 runs in the Indian Premier League 2024 match. Prithvi Shaw and Tristan Stubbs played outstanding innings for Delhi Capitals, scoring half-centuries, but their efforts were in vain as Mumbai Indians posted a massive total of 234/5.

The match, held at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, was a treat for over 18,000 children from local NGOs who were invited by Mumbai Indians as part of their Education and Sports for All (ESA) Day. They witnessed some brilliant power-hitting from both teams.

On a batting-friendly pitch, Prithvi Shaw smashed a quickfire 66 off 40 balls, while Tristan Stubbs blazed his way to a 71 off just 25 balls. However, their efforts were not enough to chase down Mumbai Indians’ total.

Mumbai Indians’ innings was powered by strong contributions from Rohit Sharma (49), Ishan Kishan (42), and Tim David (49), along with an unbeaten cameo of 39 off 10 balls from Romario Shepherd. Their aggressive batting helped Mumbai Indians reach a commanding total of 234/5.

In the chase, Delhi Capitals lost the early wicket of David Warner, but Prithvi Shaw and Abishek Porel formed a strong partnership of 88 runs for the second wicket. Shaw, playing on his home ground at Wankhede Stadium, scored his first half-century of IPL 2024, while Porel displayed some excellent hitting.

However, Mumbai Indians’ bowlers fought back and took crucial wickets at regular intervals. Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2 wickets for 22 runs in his 4 overs. Gerald Coetzee was the star performer, ending the match with figures of 4-34 off his 4 overs. His three wickets in the final over ended Delhi Capitals’ hopes of a victory.

Despite the valiant efforts of Tristan Stubbs, who finished with a blistering 71 off 27 balls, Delhi Capitals fell short of the target and ended their innings at 205/8.

Mumbai Indians’ victory was a result of their aggressive batting and disciplined bowling. This win will boost their confidence and set them on the right track for the rest of the season.

With this win, Mumbai Indians become the first T20 team to register 250 wins.

In the post-match press conference, Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya expressed his happiness with the team’s performance and emphasized the importance of settling the team to achieve consistent success.

MI skipper Hardik Pandya said, ‘I would like to have this feeling of being the winning captain more often than not. Lot of hard work, hard to clear our minds, and everything clicked. We will be making some tactical changes here and there but more often than not this will be our XII. Settling of the team is important. There was a lot of love and care going around, everyone knows we lost three games but the belief and backing was there, everyone believes we needed just one win and today was the start. I mean amazing, to start with 77 after six is always wonderful. The way everyone was batting, we needed rhythm to bat, the way everyone is chipping in with the opportunity coming in was fantastic. That was some hitting from Romario, he won us the game. The difference was his innings. I like him, he always has a smile of his face, doesn’t run away, very proud of the way he played, proud of the team. All good, will be bowling at the right time. Had it covered, so didn’t need to roll my arm over.’
