The main accused in Baba Tarsem Singh’s murder case, Amarjit Singh alias Bittu, was killed in an encounter with the Uttarakhand Special Task Force (STF) in the Bhagwanpur area of Haridwar on Tuesday. The state’s Director General of Police (DGP), Abhinav Kumar, confirmed the encounter. Amarjit Singh was a shooter with a bounty of Rs 1 lakh on his head. His accomplice managed to escape during the encounter.

According to the DGP, the Uttarakhand STF and Haridwar Police have launched a joint operation to apprehend the absconding accused.

Baba Tarsem Singh, the ‘karseva’ chief of Nanakmatta Gurdwara, was shot dead on March 28 by two bike-borne assailants at the gurdwara in Udham Singh Nagar. Since then, the police have been actively pursuing the case.

The reward amount for the absconding main accused shooters, Amarjit Singh and Sarabjit Singh, had been increased from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh each. Three more accused involved in orchestrating the crime have already been arrested.

DGP Kumar had earlier stated that the Uttarakhand Police considered Baba Tarsem Singh’s murder as a challenge and were determined to catch both the killers. The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, has also instructed the police to take strict action against criminals committing such heinous crimes in the state.
