Director General of Telangana Vigilance and Enforcement department Rajiv Ratan, whose sudden demise on Tuesday shocked the police fraternity and his well-wishers, was known for his contributions in various positions he held. Notably, during his time as the Director General of TS Disaster Response and Fire Services department, Ratan brought about significant changes in its functioning to improve fire safety measures and ensure the implementation of the Fire Safety Act.

One of the notable changes he introduced was the standard operating procedures for fire-fighting, which aimed to reduce the response time for any fire mishap. He also coordinated with local police, traffic police, and other agencies to ensure a ‘green channel’ for fire-fighting vehicles, enabling them to reach the spot quickly.

Under his leadership, the department introduced fire-fighting bullet bikes equipped with foam mist to become the first responders to minor fires. These bikes could navigate through regular traffic and extinguish the fire before the larger fire-fighting vehicles arrived.

Ratan also focused on digitalization and made the department’s services accessible online. Telangana became the first state to introduce online services for fire safety renewals, no-objection certificates, and permissions for various services. This digitalization reduced the time and effort required for obtaining permissions and certificates, providing relief to citizens and promoting ease of doing business.

Additionally, Ratan emphasized the importance of regular mock drills and fire safety awareness programs. Mock drills were made mandatory at each fire station, and teams were sent to residential schools to educate children about domestic fire mishaps. Through these efforts, Ratan aimed to improve overall fire safety preparedness in the state.

During his tenure, Ratan took strict action against fire safety violations. He ensured that an erring builder was jailed and a prominent hotel was sealed for violating fire safety norms. These actions sent a strong message about the importance of adhering to fire safety regulations.

Ratan’s contributions were not only limited to enhancing fire safety measures but also uplifting the morale and reputation of the department. He made fire personnel eligible for gallantry awards, including Presidential medals. These steps boosted the department’s morale and recognition.

Director General Rajiv Ratan’s sudden demise is a great loss to the police fraternity and the state of Telangana. His visionary leadership and remarkable contributions will be remembered in the field of disaster response and fire services.
