Muslims in India to Observe Additional Day of Fasting as Eid al-Fitr Delayed to April 11

Many Muslims in India will observe another day of fasting on April 10 due to the non-sighting of the crescent Moon, which has delayed the celebration of Eid al-Fitr to April 11 in most parts of the country. The tradition of moon sighting is deeply ingrained in Islamic culture and marks the conclusion of Ramadan and the start of the Shawwal month. In Jammu and Kashmir, as well as Ladakh, Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated on April 10 after the Shawwal Moon was sighted. Kerala and West Asia will also celebrate Eid on April 10, as the moon was sighted in those regions. The significance of Eid-ul-Fitr lies in its marking of the culmination of the fasting month of Ramadan and the beginning of a new month. Prophet Muhammad himself awaited reports of the crescent moon’s appearance, as it signaled the advent of a new month.
