Dixon Technologies: India’s Rising Star in Manufacturing Shows the Way

Not long ago, there was a time when Indian businesses could not think of competing with China. In just a few years, many of them are not only competing with Chinese companies globally but have also emerged as icons of indigenous manufacturing. An Indian company, Dixon Technologies, has taken advantage of the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme just when the world was moving away from China under the China+ strategy to diversify manufacturing away from China due to geopolitical tensions.

Dixon, which has emerged as India’s largest electronics contract manufacturer, is buying a majority stake in Ismartu India, a firm engaged in electronics and mobile devices manufacturing. An Indian arm of a Chinese company, Transsion Technology, Ismartu India manufactures feature and smartphones for brands like Itel, Infinix and Tecno at its three factories in Noida.

“It’s an opportunity for the Indian contract manufacturers to partner with the technology giants from any country, and so is the case with China, to bring the best technologies, cost efficiencies, automation into the Indian manufacturing ecosystem,” Atul B Lall, vice chairman of Dixon Technologies, has told ET.

Since the start of the PLI scheme in 2021, Dixon has emerged as one of the leading mobile phone manufacturers in the country. It has been consistently achieving PLI targets and receiving incentives while other domestic companies have been lagging behind, say analysts…
