Milk Prices Soar in Karachi After Approval from Commissioner

The price of milk in Karachi, Pakistan, has shot up to PKR 210 per litre after the city’s commissioner approved a hike, meeting the demands of the Dairy Farmers Association. This increase of PKR 10 per litre has caused concerns amongst the inflation-burdened citizens of Karachi. Earlier speculations of a potential PKR 50 per litre increase in milk prices have been swirling around. Mubasher Qadeer Abbasi, the president of Dairy Farmers Karachi, has indicated that an increase of PKR 50 per litre is expected soon, citing the high cost of milk production, soaring cattle prices, and government negligence as contributing factors. Abbasi has urged the Karachi Commissioner to issue a notification promptly aligning the new prices with milk production costs. He has emphasized that if authorities do not announce the increase in milk prices by May 10, stakeholders will take matters into their own hands and raise prices after consensus. Amidst all this, the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) has reported a one per cent decrease in weekly inflation in Pakistan. However, there has been an overall increase compared to the same week last year. The SPI covers 17 urban centers and 51 essential items across all expenditure groups. For the lowest consumption group, there was a decrease of 1.09 per cent, with the SPI dropping to 306.26 points from the previous week’s 309.64 points.
