Renovation work on the Thuraiymangalam Big Tank near Perambalur, undertaken by the Water Resources Department (WRD), is progressing at a steady pace. The anticipated cost of the renovation is ₹49 lakh, and it is expected to be completed before the arrival of the monsoon season. The tank, situated in the Maruthaiyar river basin, plays a crucial role in irrigating approximately 273.80 acres of land in the district. With a capacity of 17.22 million cubic feet, the tank is fed by inlet channels from various sources such as the Ladapuram big and small tanks, Kuumbalur, Senjeri, Aranarai, and Perambalur west and east tanks, as well as an anicut near Maruthaiyar Vilamuthur. The tank bund, spanning 1,064 meters, is being strengthened as a key part of the renovation process.
Recently, District Collector K. Karpagam inspected the progress of the work being carried out on the tank. She emphasized the importance of removing encroachments on the tank premises and directed the officials to ensure that any conduit pipes discharging sewage are also removed. The completion of the renovation work before the onset of the monsoon was stressed by the District Collector. WRD Executive Engineer Velmurugan and Assistant Engineer Saravanan were also present during the inspection. This renovation project will greatly contribute to the preservation and sustainable use of water resources in the area, benefiting both agriculture and the local population.
