Enduring unusually high rains, floods, and extended summer heat waves, a podcast series in Tamil called ‘Climate Change from Ordinary People’s Perspective’ takes a deep dive into the experiences and opinions of everyday individuals. Created by Karthik G and Benisha Maggie, two young eco-social changemakers, the podcast aims to bring about a change in the way climate change is perceived and understood. Karthik and Benisha noticed a lack of discussions on the grassroots level impact of climate change on marginalized farmers and fishermen. Most information available revolves around a macro level view. With their podcast, they aim to provide localized perspectives based on their own experiences and learning. Karthik, an engineer from NIT Trichy, collaborates with organic farmers and serves as a coordinator for the Tamil Nadu Iyarkai Velan Kootamaippu. Benisha, a graphic designer with an architectural background, utilizes art as a means of communication. Inspired by the floods, Karthik worked closely with affected communities and witnessed their struggles firsthand. He observed that rainwater took longer to drain in certain areas, making it difficult for people, especially farmers, auto drivers, and fishermen, to continue their work. Unlike salaried employees who can work from the comfort of their homes or offices, these individuals face challenges due to the effects of climate change. The podcast aims to attract a young audience and encourage their participation in social causes. Karthik and Benisha believe that individuals can raise their voices against systemic changes that favor marginalized communities affected by climate change. They also emphasize personal steps in terms of consumption and lifestyle choices that can contribute to creating a positive impact.
