Supreme Court Calls Tamil Nadu’s Mekedatu Challenge ‘Premature’; Leaders Demand Strong Action
November 14, 2025
The dramatic Cauvery water saga has taken a fresh turn! The Supreme Court called Tamil Nadu’s application against Karnataka’s Mekedatu dam project “premature” and refused to consider it. This decision on November 14, 2025, has upset many in Tamil Nadu who are watching the Cauvery waters closely.
Former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, who held the Public Works portfolio from 2001 to 2006, along with Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) general secretary T.T.V. Dhinakaran, have voiced strong words against this move. They called upon the current DMK government in Tamil Nadu to take firm action by either appealing the Supreme Court’s decision or filing a curative petition to protect the state’s water rights.
Panneerselvam slammed the court’s reasoning, saying that the time has come for the Cauvery Water Management Authority and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee to carefully examine the Detailed Project Report (DPR) related to the Mekedatu reservoir. He labeled the situation as an “injustice to Tamil Nadu.”
Adding to the alarm, T.T.V. Dhinakaran warned that Karnataka might speed up construction work on the dam. This could turn the precious Cauvery river water into a mere “mirage” for farmers in Tamil Nadu, threatening their crops and livelihoods.
The Mekedatu project, planned across the inter-state Cauvery river, has been a hot topic for years. Tamil Nadu fears that Karnataka’s reservoir will reduce the water flow downstream, affecting millions.
With leaders now urging the DMK government to challenge the Supreme Court’s decision, the Cauvery water dispute remains as fiery as ever. Will Tamil Nadu succeed in safeguarding its lifeline? Only time will tell!
