JDA Demolishes Journalist's House in Jammu, Hindu Neighbour Offers Land to Support Family
November 29, 2025
Jammu Development Authority (JDA) demolished the home of journalist Arfaz Daing on November 27, 2025, citing encroachment on land. The house stood for 40 years on three marlas (0.01875 acres). In solidarity, Hindu neighbour Kuldeep Sharma from Jammu’s Narwal offered five marlas (0.03125 acres) of land to Daing’s family. "Those who demolished the house are heartless people," Sharma said. "If they try to demolish a house on five marlas, I will offer 10 marlas. No one will be allowed to harm Jammu’s brotherhood and harmony." Sharma criticized the BJP’s “divisive politics” and urged J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to step down if he cannot control government departments. BJP leader Ravinder Raina condemned the demolition without prior notice, saying, "We do not support demolitions. We stand with the family." Former J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti called the move brutal and pointed out the dismissal of PDP’s anti-bulldozer bill. Many political leaders and civil society members visited Daing’s family to show support. Advocate Supriya Singh Chouhan urged the judiciary to take suo motu action and stressed fair, non-selective enforcement. Daing is noted for his reports on illegal narcotics supply involving officials in Jammu. The incident has raised concerns about communal harmony and selective administrative actions in the region.
