Leh Violence Probe Extended by 10 Days After LAB Requests More Time
November 29, 2025
The Judicial Inquiry Commission investigating the Leh violence has extended its deadline to record statements and gather evidence by 10 days. This extension came after the Leh Apex Body (LAB) formally requested more time. The three-member commission, led by former Supreme Court judge B.S. Chauhan, was appointed by the Ministry of Home Affairs on October 17. It is probing the serious law and order situation in Leh on September 24, which resulted in the deaths of four people, including a Kargil war veteran from 1999.
The violence broke out between security forces and protesters demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh. The clashes left four civilians dead and about 90 injured, intensifying a long-running agitation.
The original deadline for collecting statements was November 28. The LAB's co-chairman sent a written request on November 27, saying many people still wanted to give their statements and submit evidence. Mohan Singh Parihar, judicial secretary to the commission, said Justice Chauhan reviewed the plea virtually and agreed to extend the deadline to December 8.
The LAB is a group of social, political, and religious organizations in Ladakh leading the movement for constitutional safeguards, including statehood and Sixth Schedule inclusion.
