The Karnataka Transport Department has launched a new AI-based Smart Lock system to stop fake Learner’s Licence Registrations (LLRs). Many applicants were getting licences without taking the mandatory online test, often through middlemen or driving schools. The new system, developed by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, is now part of the Sarathi Parivahan Seva portal. It uses AI, facial recognition, and behaviour checks to confirm the real applicant is taking the test. A senior Transport official told The Hindu, “There have been widespread complaints that driving schools and middlemen are facilitating LLRs for applicants who do not take the test. The Smart Lock system is intended to eliminate this practice completely.” Officials noted that multiple fake tests were given by substitute candidates arranged by cyber centres and middlemen. This led to thousands getting LLRs without knowing road rules, risking road safety. How it works: The process is fully digital. Applicants fill forms, upload documents, and pay fees online. The system limits applications to two per IP address, blocking mass submissions from one location. During the online test, the AI watches the candidate via camera and microphone. It tracks face, eye movement, head position, hand activity, and sounds. If someone else is helping or the candidate looks away, the test is canceled immediately. An official said, “Smart Lock will make it extremely difficult for anyone to obtain an LLR through illegal means.” However, some applicants report technical problems. Naveen K. from Jayanagar said the system only supports Windows 10 or higher and works poorly on Android. He faced crashes and repeated failures in face-authentication. If authentication fails, the test ends and candidates must start over. The Transport Department has asked local officials to report all issues. They will review and fix problems soon, the official added.
