Efforts are underway to revive the long-pending master plan for the integrated development of the Sabarimala pilgrimage zone. Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) president K. Jayakumar, who was earlier chairman of the Sabarimala high-powered committee, has called a meeting on December 16. "Members of the committee, including its technical experts, will attend the meeting to review the status of various projects in Sabarimala and identify mid-term priorities that can help ensure a smoother pilgrimage season next year," Jayakumar said. Several key projects such as the Darshanam complex, the Annadana Mandapam, and the sewage treatment plant were implemented under the committee's supervision. Jayakumar, a former bureaucrat, noted that "ad hocism" is the biggest curse in project implementation at the temple. The December 16 meeting will prepare the TDB to present a full status update to the committee's head, S. Siri Jagan, a former Kerala High Court judge. Jagan will chair another review on December 29. Once critical long-term and mid-term projects are clearly listed, the TDB may seek sponsorship from trusted corporate houses if funds fall short. Though the Kerala government approved a new master plan earlier this year, the TDB’s immediate focus remains on the four-volume master plan by Ecosmart, approved by the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, the number of devotees visiting Sabarimala is rising. About 12 lakh pilgrims have had darshan in the first two weeks of the ongoing season. Between November 16 and November 29, 11,89,088 devotees visited the temple. On the evening of November 29 alone, 61,190 trekked up the hill.
