The Kottayam district administration has started distributing voting machines to municipalities and block panchayats. Returning officers collected the machines from the warehouse at Ettumanoor Satram. On Saturday, machines for Ettumanur, Changanassery municipalities and Vaikom, Kaduthuruthy, Pampady block panchayats were delivered. District Collector and Election Officer Chetan Kumar Meena inspected the warehouse.
Voting machines will reach 17 centres across 11 blocks and six municipalities. These will be given to polling officers the day before the elections on December 9. On Sunday, deliveries continue to Ettumanur, Pallam, Lalam, Erattupetta blocks, and Kottayam, Erattupetta municipalities. Monday will see final deliveries to Pala and Vaikom municipalities and Vazhoor, Madappally, Uzhavoor, Kanjirappally blocks.
"Commissioning of voting machines will happen at distribution centres from December 3 to 5," said Collector Meena. The district needs 1,925 control units and 5,775 ballot units. So far, 3,404 control units and 9,516 ballot units have been prepped.
On December 2, the second randomisation phase will finalize the polling staff list. This includes 1,925 primary officers and 385 reserve officers each, totaling 9,240 across all roles.
Training for polling staff finished on Friday. Authorities identified 60 sensitive polling booths. A total of 5,281 candidates, including 2,823 women, contest 1,611 wards in 89 local bodies. The district has 1,641,176 voters: 784,842 males, 856,321 females, and 13 transgender voters. There will be 1,925 polling booths.
Collector Meena urged everyone to follow the State Election Commission's code of conduct. He stressed the importance of vigilance by political parties, candidates, and the public and highlighted adherence to the green code during elections.
