RPF, GRP Crack Down on Reckless Track Crossing to Prevent Fatalities in Southern Railways
November 29, 2025
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) have launched a crackdown on careless railway track crossing in the Palakkad division of Southern Railways. This action follows a worrying rise in run-over accidents, some fatal. Special squads are now carrying out flash checks near major stations. Those caught moving carelessly near tracks will face legal action under Section 147 of the Railways Act. Officers say many violators are "well-educated and well-informed" people, making strict enforcement necessary. Migrant workers rushing across tracks rather than using foot overbridges or lifts remain a major concern. In the last one-and-a-half months, about five deaths occurred near Vadakara, including suspected suicides and vulnerable individuals such as a hearing-impaired man. A recent incident saw a patrol squad rescue a youth just before the Vande Bharat Express arrived, thanks to a tip-off. Police plan regular patrols along dangerous stretches and seek help from residents’ forums to improve surveillance. A merchant in Kozhikode worries that many students cross tracks carelessly, sometimes for risky social media photoshoots, while some dangerous areas lack guards. Rail user groups demand more safety cameras and reactivation of community groups to ensure quick responses to threats. Meanwhile, railway authorities are discussing advanced surveillance upgrades and planning awareness programs with community support to promote safe track behaviour.
