Kerala Plans New 35 Lakh Litre Water Tank at Thammanam After Collapse
November 29, 2025
The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has designed a new water tank with a capacity of 35 lakh litres at Thammanam. This plan follows the partial collapse of the old 1.35 crore litre water tank, which caused a temporary water crisis in the city. The new tank will be built on land owned by KWA. It will measure 41 metres in length and 17 metres in width, divided into two compartments holding 17.5 lakh litres each. The water column height will be 5.4 metres, up from 4.2 metres in the old tank.
The existing tank, commissioned in 1985, partially collapsed due to its foundation sinking. For the new design, KWA plans a deep pile foundation using reinforced concrete, unlike the sand piling used earlier. "Sand piling was used for the old tank. Now, we have proposed a reinforced concrete piling for the new tank. Further, a monolithic seamless structure without joints is being planned for the new tank," said sources from KWA.
To support the higher water column, all walls will be reinforced with buttresses or columns. Due to limited space, a larger tank is not possible, so the 35 lakh litre capacity was chosen. The new tank will cover about 20 cents of area. This design has been shared with the high-level committee formed after the tank collapse to ensure safety and durability.
