70% Decrease in Indians Attempting to Enter US Illegally in Jan-May 2025

July 3, 2025

The crackdown on illegal immigration under Trump's presidency has resulted in a significant decrease in the number of Indians attempting to enter the US unlawfully. The numbers show a sharp decline from 34,535 in Jan-May 2024 to 10,382 in the same period of 2025, as per data released by US Customs and Border Protection (USCBP). This decline can be attributed to Trump's stringent approach towards illegal immigration, disrupting long-established smuggling networks catering to hopeful migrants from Gujarat. The desperation to pursue the American dream persists among some, with around 10,382 Indians risking their lives to cross the border, including at least 30 unaccompanied minors, despite the increasing risks involved. Syndicates involved in human smuggling operations have also adjusted their activities in anticipation of Trump's return to power. Many paused their operations in late 2024, reflecting the impact of the anticipated changes in immigration policies. The fear of stricter deportation measures has compelled syndicates to either reduce their operations or increase costs, affecting the overall scenario of illegal immigration. Although the overall data on apprehended illegal immigrants has shown a significant decline, the allure of a better life across the border continues to attract Indians, particularly from Gujarat. Tragic incidents like the capsizing of a boat near Del Mar, California, resulting in the death of minors and injuries to their parents, highlight the perils faced by those attempting to cross the US border. The risks involved in such journeys have claimed the lives of at least nine individuals from Gujarat since January 2025. The situation is further exacerbated by cases of minors being abandoned by adult companions during these dangerous voyages, while some families are encouraged by smugglers to separate in the hope of lenient treatment under US immigration rules. According to officials, Gujarat remains a prominent source of illegal migration, with established networks of agents facilitating overland routes through Central America.
