District administration in Karnataka has alerted officers of relevant government departments to brace themselves for potential flooding as the Krishna and Bhima rivers have been swelling with a significant increase in water levels over the past few days. Heavy rains in the catchment areas of the two rivers have led to a surge in water inflow to the Basavasagar reservoir in Narayanapur and the Sannati bridge barrage in Sannati. As a result, authorities from the Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigama Limited (KBJNL) have started releasing water into the rivers. Reports indicate that the outflow from the Basavasagar reservoir reached 95,265 cusecs on Friday, with an inflow of 1 lakh cusecs. The current water level in the reservoir is recorded at 490.70 meters compared to the normal level of 492.25 meters. Additionally, the outflow from the Sannati Barrage to the Bhima river has reached 15,000 cusecs. Deputy Commissioner B. Susheela, in a recent meeting, directed officers to warn residents living along the riverbanks to refrain from approaching the rivers for any reason. She emphasized the need for coordination between the Revenue, Rural Development, and Panchayat Raj departments to effectively communicate with villagers about the rising water levels through WhatsApp messages and in-person visits.
