India has secured the fourth position globally in income equality, following countries like the Slovak Republic, Slovenia, and Belarus, as per the latest data from the World Bank. The Gini Index of India stands at 25.5, positioning it as one of the most equal societies worldwide. This score is notably lower compared to China's 35.7 and the United States' 41.8. India's ranking reflects a move towards a moderately low inequality category, with steady progress towards joining the low inequality group. The country's Gini Index has shown improvement over the years, dropping from 28.8 in 2011 to 25.5 in 2022, signifying consistent advancement in blending economic growth with social equity. This success is attributed to India's efforts in poverty alleviation, with 171 million people lifted out of extreme poverty over the past decade. The share of individuals living below $2.15 a day decreased significantly from 16.2% in 2011-12 to 2.3% in 2022-23. With the revised extreme poverty threshold set at $3.00 per day, the poverty rate for 2022-23 would stand at 5.3%. The Gini Index serves as a measure of income, wealth, or consumption distribution equality within a nation, with a scale from 0 to 100. A higher score indicates greater inequality, with 100 depicting absolute inequality where one person holds all the resources. India's notable standing on the Gini Index underscores its progress towards a more equal society.
