The NCERT's latest Class 8 Science textbook 'Curiosity' is revolutionizing the way students perceive science education in India. By infusing traditional Indian wisdom with modern scientific concepts, the textbook aims to shed light on India's rich scientific heritage. From discussions on Acharya Kanad's concept of atoms to expeditions like Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan, the book delves deep into the realm of science. The chapter 'Particulate Nature of Matter' pays homage to Acharya Kanad, an ancient Indian philosopher who first introduced the idea of atoms, known as 'Parmanu'. Additionally, it explores Isro's key missions like Chandrayaan 1, 2, and 3, Aditya L1, and Mangalyaan, highlighting India's advancements in space exploration. In the chapter 'Light: Mirrors and Lenses', the textbook showcases the innovative techniques used by Indian astronomers over 800 years ago to observe stars and planets using reflective surfaces. This integration of traditional wisdom with contemporary scientific knowledge is intended not only to educate but also to instill curiosity, environmental consciousness, and critical thinking skills among students. Another chapter named 'Nature of Matter: Elements, Compounds and Mixtures' sheds light on the historical use of alloys for medicinal purposes as mentioned in ancient Indian texts. Moreover, it features a segment titled 'Our Scientific Heritage', drawing parallels between India's traditional variolation method against smallpox and modern vaccine developments. The book emphasizes the pivotal role played by Indian vaccine companies during the Covid-19 pandemic and their continued support for global health initiatives, showcasing the seamless blend of ancient practices with futuristic advancements.
