Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in the Kannur district of Kerala, resulting in widespread flooding in areas such as Arlam, Karikottakkari, and Mundayamparamba within the Ayyankunnu panchayat. The situation grew dire with several rivers, including the Kakuva and Baveli, breaching their banks, prompting local officials to take immediate action to safeguard residents. As water levels continued to rise, emergency evacuations were carried out, affecting over 50 households in the tribal rehabilitation zones of the 11th and 13th blocks. Families were temporarily relocated to nearby Anganwadis and to the homes of relatives, as panic grew among the affected populations. Local volunteers, supported by the Irrity Fire and Rescue Service, played an essential role in the evacuation process, ensuring that residents were guided to safer grounds as conditions worsened. In Karikottakkari-Mundayamparmbu, the flooding reached critical levels in the evening hours, submerging the Karikottakkari-Kalrikkal bridge and halting traffic, which further complicated evacuation efforts. Amidst these storms, strong winds also contributed to the destruction, as evidenced by a fallen tree in Kolithattu that collapsed a house. Fortunately, the inhabitants managed to escape without injuries. In light of the rising water levels, authorities raised the shutters of the Pazhassi dam to alleviate pressure on the surrounding areas. Thirteen of the total 16 spillway shutters were lifted by three meters, with one raised by 2.5 meters. The water level currently stands at 21.30 meters, prompting the Irrigation Executive Engineer to advise residents downstream to remain vigilant as further rains were anticipated. To ensure public safety, District Collector Arun K. Vijayan announced a ban on all tourist activities and quarry operations across the district until conditions improve, citing the dangerous weather. An official alert has been disseminated to both administrative divisions and the general public to remain cautious regarding possible flooding risks and to exercise particular care in vulnerable zones. This combination of factors emphasizes the severity of the situation as residents and officials come together to confront the challenges imposed by nature.
