The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather forecast indicating that several districts in West Bengal will experience heavy rainfall until August 6. This weather pattern is attributed to a cyclonic circulation situated over the northern part of the Bay of Bengal combined with a strong southwest monsoon flow. According to the IMD's latest bulletin, heavy rain is expected in specific districts of south Bengal, including North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Hooghly, Purba Bardhaman, and Paschim Bardhaman, as well as Birbhum, Purulia, and Bankura, lasting into the weekend. Furthermore, Kolkata is slated to experience significant rainfall on Saturday, potentially impacting daily activities and infrastructure. Residents of south Bengal districts should also prepare for thunderstorms, which may carry lightning and winds gusting up to 30-40 km/h. This weather could pose safety risks, and residents are advised to exercise caution during stormy conditions. In north Bengal, particularly in the sub-Himalayan regions, districts such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar are under alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall expected from August 2 to August 4. This rainfall may cause disruption, including potential landslides or flooding in vulnerable areas. Recent rainfall data from the IMD shows that Canning in south Bengal recorded the highest rainfall in the past 24 hours, with 110 mm reported up to 8:30 AM on Thursday. Additionally, the Alipore region in Kolkata received 37 mm, while Salt Lake recorded 72 mm of rain during the same period. Other areas such as Bankura saw 72 mm and Bardhaman received 61 mm, contributing to the saturated conditions in various parts of the state. Due to this adverse weather, the IMD continues to monitor conditions closely and may update forecasts as necessary. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through local weather advisories, as conditions can change rapidly.
