Almost a year after the tragic incident, where a young female doctor was raped and murdered in Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College, her parents continue to grieve and fight for justice. The 26-year-old postgraduate trainee's body was discovered in a seminar room at the hospital, shocking the community and triggering protests from students, doctors, and civil society. Her father, sharing their despair, stated, “We have lost all faith in the police and the CBI,” citing a perceived compromise within the investigative body. The family is eager for what they see as justice, yet their cries remain unanswered. On August 9 of last year, the brutality of the crime sent shockwaves not just throughout West Bengal but across India, depicting a grim reality for women's safety in supposedly secure environments. In previous months following the incident, arrests were made, including civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, who received a life sentence for his involvement in the crime. However, the family is not convinced that the case is resolved. They argue that the nature of the crime suggests multiple assailants, calling it implausible that one individual could execute such an act alone within a locked area of a public hospital. The mother asserts, “There is no way only one man could have done this inside such a secure building.” Legal proceedings have faced challenges as well. Two notable arrests included Sandip Ghosh, the principal of the medical college, and Abhijit Mondal, a police officer accused of misconduct during the investigation. Mondal's release on bail after a lack of timely action from the CBI further underscores the family's frustrations. "We were foolish to trust the CBI," her father lamented, emphasizing a series of delays and perceived indecisiveness. As the case remains unresolved, the family questions the integrity of the investigation. They reference the Supreme Court's remarks concerning the handling of the case, which they feel highlight incompetence and a lack of urgency. The mother adds, “Our daughter was raped and murdered in a room that's supposed to be locked inside a government hospital. How does that happen without protection from powerful people?” Reflecting on the systemic issues in play, the father draws parallels to other recent incidents of violence against women, notably a gang rape incident tied to the ruling Trinamool Congress party, illustrating rampant insecurity that persists despite public outcry. "What makes our tragedy unbearable is that my daughter wanted to serve the poor. Her dreams now lie locked inside a wooden trunk, her stethoscope, half-written thesis notes, and medals from the medical school,” he expressed. The couple’s resolve to seek justice remains strong, yet they voice skepticism as the social momentum fades. Protests have dwindled, and the once-vocal leaders have fallen silent. “We are ordinary people, but not fools,” stated the mother, stressing their commitment to uncovering the truth. They plan to rekindle public support by organizing events to commemorate the incident’s first anniversary, including a march and a forum to ensure their daughter's story stays alive in the public consciousness. In recent discussions, the father passionately stated what justice means to them: “Justice means truth, naming everyone who was involved directly or indirectly. It means jail, not bail. And restoring the dignity they tried so hard to erase.” As the family continues to seek answers, they remain hopeful that the judiciary might provide the justice they are desperately chasing.
