Weather Alert: Heavy Rainfall Predicted in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh

August 5, 2025

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall across Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh from August 4 to August 6, 2025. This has raised concerns regarding possible waterlogging, damage to crops, and disruptions in utilities. The IMD has reported that in the past 24 hours, light to moderate rainfall has occurred in several locations across these regions, particularly noting heavy rain in isolated districts of Haryana. As forecasts indicate an intensifying of rainfall activity in the coming days, residents are advised to prepare for a significant increase in rain, especially from August 5 onwards. The IMD predicts widespread light to moderate rainfall on August 5, with areas in northern and eastern Punjab, as well as the regions of northern, eastern, and southern Haryana, and Chandigarh, receiving heavier precipitation that could exceed 7 cm. On August 6, Haryana and Chandigarh are also expected to receive significant rainfall. A particular point of concern is the prediction for very heavy rainfall of 12 cm or more on August 5, especially in the districts of Yamunanagar, Karnal, Panipat, Sonipat, Jhajjar, Gurugram, Faridabad, Mewat, and Palwal. The IMD has warned of various potential impacts associated with this rainfall, including waterlogging in low-lying areas, damage to crops already harvested or left in open fields, and disruptions to water and electricity supply. Congestion in traffic due to slippery roads and limited visibility is also anticipated, along with an increase in water levels in seasonal rivers and drains, posing risks to weak or temporary structures in these areas. Farmers are advised to avoid irrigation and the application of chemicals in their fields during this period. It is also recommended to ensure that proper drainage is maintained and to store harvested crops in safe, covered storage areas to prevent damage from rain. For residents, it is essential to refrain from venturing into waterlogged areas and to stay clear of water bodies to ensure safety. Taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms is discouraged due to the risk of falling branches. Drivers should be cautious and practice safe driving during adverse weather, and it is generally recommended to stay indoors when severe weather conditions develop. The IMD has also released a detailed district-wise weather forecast to help the public stay informed. Local authorities are encouraged to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions to mitigate any adverse effects from the predicted weather. Residents are urged to go through the official alerts and heed advice to ensure their safety and preparedness. With the looming rainfall, it is important for the public to stay updated and ready to face potential challenges brought about by these weather changes.
