Get ready for a telecom shake-up! On Friday, Minister of State for Telecom, Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, gave a sharp wake-up call to BSNL circles, including UP and Bihar. The order? Fix the power problems on towers, improve service quality, and find snazzy local sales tricks to pump up BSNL’s presence. This comes after Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia charged the company to grow its mobile customer base by a whopping 50% next year. In a spirited review meeting with all circle and business heads, Pemmasani also pushed for big jumps in BSNL's enterprise and fixed line businesses — asking them to rise by 25-30% and 15-20% respectively. Sharing his fiery message on X (formerly Twitter), he said, "Reviewed @BSNLCorporate performance of UP, Bihar, MP and West Bengal circles today. Emphasised improving quality of service, resolving tower power issues, timely rectification of fibre cuts and adopting innovative, locally-suited sales and marketing strategies to strengthen BSNL's footprint." The government isn’t holding back either — pouring over ₹3 lakh crore in the last six years to revive this telecom giant. And the effort is showing signs of life: BSNL reported net profits in two quarters in a row after a staggering 18-year gap! The state-run firm posted ₹280 crore profit in the March quarter of FY25, turning around from a loss of ₹849 crore a year ago. Earlier, it had shown a ₹262 crore profit after tax in October-December of the previous financial year. But the big challenge remains: BSNL’s customer numbers have been slipping, mainly because of service quality problems. Can these fresh efforts from the top brass fix the glitches and get customers flocking back? With bold goals and pumped-up funding, BSNL aims to roar back into India’s telecom game with a bang!
