Israel is gearing up for a massive military operation in Gaza City, calling up 60,000 reservists and extending service for 20,000 more. This bold move, approved by Defense Minister Israel Katz, targets Hamas’ heartland amidst ongoing ceasefire talks and international worries. In a country with fewer than 10 million people, summoning so many reservists is a major step, showing Israel’s strong intent. The military plans to strike in parts of Gaza City where they believe Hamas fighters still hide, especially in places like Zeitoun and Jabaliya refugee camp. Gaza City is not just a military base for Hamas — it’s their governing hub and one of the last shelters for hundreds of thousands of Palestinians. An unnamed military official explained that Israeli troops aim to destroy Hamas’ extensive underground tunnel network here. Despite killing many senior Hamas leaders, Israel says the group is regrouping and still attacking, including firing rockets at Israel. The exact start date for this operation is unclear but could be soon. It’s the biggest reservist call-up in months, all happening while negotiators race to secure a ceasefire to pause 22 months of fighting. Human rights groups warn that this assault will worsen Gaza’s devastating humanitarian crisis. Most residents have been displaced, neighborhoods lie in ruins, and many face starvation. In a related development, Israel approved a controversial settlement project in the West Bank called E1, close to Jerusalem. This plan was frozen for years due to international pressure but got a green light recently. Mayor Guy Yifrach of Maale Adumim proudly stated, “I am pleased to announce that just a short while ago, the civil administration approved the planning for the construction of the E1 neighbourhood.” The West Bank houses about 3 million Palestinians alongside roughly 500,000 Israeli settlers. Building in E1 raises fears about the future of a Palestinian state and sparks fresh global criticism. So, while Israel prepares a fierce strike against Hamas in Gaza City, it is also stirring controversy by expanding settlements in the West Bank. The region remains a flashpoint, with each move stirring new tensions and hopes for peace hanging by a thread.
