In a twist full of drama and action, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced on Thursday that IPS officer Satish Golcha will be the new Commissioner of Police for Delhi. The appointment is immediate and marks a big change in the capital’s law enforcement. Satish Golcha is no stranger to tough challenges. A 1992-batch IPS officer, he has held key posts like deputy commissioner of police (DCP), joint commissioner, and special commissioner of Delhi Police. His star rose sharply during the 2020 northeast Delhi riots, where he was special commissioner of police (law and order) and earned respect for handling the chaos. Before this new role, he was Director General of Tihar Jail and even served as the Director General of Police (DGP) for Arunachal Pradesh from February 2022 to June 2023. The Home Ministry’s order clearly states: "With the approval of the Competent Authority, Sh. Satish Golcha, IPS (AGMUT:1992), presently posted as Director General (Prisons), Delhi, is hereby appointed to the post of the Commissioner of Police, Delhi with effect from the date of assumption of charge and until further orders." Golcha steps in after S B K Singh, Director General of Home Guards, who was acting commissioner since August 1. The timing is jaw-dropping, coming just a day after a shocking incident rocked Delhi politics. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked during her weekly public hearing at her Civil Lines residence. The attacker, a 41-year-old man who sneaked in posing as a complainant, came all the way from Rajkot, Gujarat. Known as Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai Sakriya, an auto driver by profession, the man was stopped by the vigilant CM’s security team and others present. The police have registered an FIR under sections related to attempt to murder against Sakriya. This incident raised serious questions about security arrangements and may have pushed the government for quick action in appointing a strong police chief like Golcha. As Delhi dial spins with drama, Satish Golcha faces the hot seat with high expectations. Can he bring calm and control to the city once again? All eyes are on the new police chief as the capital waits for peace to return.
