LRT Service Suspended on August 24 with Shuttle Buses, Plus July CN Train Derailment Shakes Ontario Rail Travel

August 25, 2025

Attention all commuters! A heads-up is needed for Sunday morning, August 24, 2025. The Light Rail Transit (LRT) won’t be running its usual service. Grand River Transit announced that the ION service will be completely paused between Conestoga Station and Fairway Station until 1 PM. Why? "Planned maintenance," they say – the kind of work that keeps the trains safe and smooth for future rides. But no worries, shuttle buses will be your loyal helpers! CTV News reports these shuttles will pick up passengers right at or near the ION stations. Not just that, they’ll come every 15 minutes and make stops at every ION station. To find the exact pickup spots, just check Grand River Transit's website. Normal train service will jump back into action around 1 PM that Sunday. But wait, there’s more news from the rails! Back in July 2025, a Canadian National Railway Co. train took a wild turn – it derailed in southwestern Ontario. According to Global News, this caused a big halt in passenger train service while investigators rushed to find answers. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada quickly sent a team to Paris, Ontario, to collect evidence and figure out what went wrong. Fortunately, no one was hurt. CN said about two dozen railcars and one locomotive derailed but stayed upright. Even better, there were no leaks or fires or blocked crossings. However, Via Rail shared that rail traffic in that area was “completely halted.” The derailment caused significant delays and cancellations. CN now says the affected routes are either cancelled or running on alternative tracks. Passengers caught in the mess were informed directly, and all were advised to check their train statuses online before traveling. So, whether you’re hopping on the LRT this August or planning a train trip in Ontario, stay alert and plan ahead!
