Greater Chennai Corporation Unveils Big Plans: Transgender Shelter, Temporary Bus Stop & More!

August 27, 2025

Chennai's Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is on a roll with fresh developments announced at the council meeting chaired by Mayor R. Priya on Tuesday at the Ripon Building. First, a warm welcome to inclusion: GCC has created a special shelter home for transgender individuals. Sitting in Anna Nagar Zone, this shelter is 240.5 square meters and will cost ₹30,946 monthly as rent. As per the GCC's resolution, “The property, owned by the GCC, had been vacant prior to this initiative. The District Social Welfare Officer for Chennai District has selected the ‘Thozhi Transgender’ organization to manage the shelter home.” Making this space lively and safe is the goal! Next up on the list: A shuffle for the Vallalar Nagar bus stop! The council gave a green signal to temporarily shift the bus stop to a vacant 0.73-hectare land near a private school in Puzhal. This move is to help with new construction work for a permanent bus stand. The land, owned by the GCC, will be free to use for six months. The resolution notes, “A total of 26 bus inspectors and 189 bus personnel are currently stationed at Vallalar Bus Stand. The temporary arrangement has been proposed to facilitate their operations.” Quick and handy! The city is also taking care of its health and hygiene by upgrading two slaughterhouses located on Madhanakuppam Main Road and in Villivakkam. This project, costing an estimated ₹5.66 crore, includes rebuilding old structures, improving cleanliness, better waste management, proper drainage, and ensuring safety for workers and the public. Each revamped slaughterhouse will cover about 1,200 square meters. The work is expected to be done within a year, making the city's meat processing safer and cleaner. Sports and play lovers in Kodambakkam have reasons to cheer! The GCC council approved three exciting projects: building a brand-new badminton court at Nerkundram in TAISHA Phase II (Ward 127) and renovating two playgrounds at Bakthavatsalalam Street (Ward 134) and Kamarajar Colony (Ward 132). All of this comes with a budget of ₹8.89 crore, covering construction, quality checks, and safety upgrades. According to the release, "The projects will involve upgrading facilities, improving play areas, and ensuring safety measures for users." The plan is to wrap up the work by next year, making Kodambakkam even more fun for all ages. With these improvements, the Greater Chennai Corporation is clearly working hard to make the city more inclusive, lively, and healthy. Stay tuned for more updates from Chennai's heartbeat!
