Menstruation is a natural step in growing up, but the first period is often scary and confusing. Actor Kangana Ranaut, in an August 14 interview with Hauterrfly, revealed her own shocking first period experience. Kangana said her periods started later than most girls. "By the time we were in ninth grade, everyone's periods had started, but mine hadn't. My mother became quite worried and asked me about it, but I said no," she shared. Playing with dolls at that age frustrated her mom. Kangana recalled, "Out of frustration, my mom got angry and said, 'First, your periods aren't coming, and on top of that, dolls? What is this?' She picked up all my dolls and threw them away, saying, 'That's why your periods aren't coming.'" Her mother kept telling her, "One day my periods would start and that I should come to her when it happens." When Kangana's first period finally came, it was a shock. "I woke up and the bedsheet was full of blood. I was horrified. I couldn't believe this happens every month, I was crying," she said. Though her mother was relieved, Kangana admitted she felt scared, thinking, "Will this always happen?" The sudden change made her feel vulnerable. "I thought papa won't love me, mom won't hug me, and I had already become an adult overnight," she confessed. Talking about traditions, Kangana said her mother gave her sanitary pads instead of cloth, aiming to help the next generation. But she added, "During those days, I wasn't allowed in the kitchen or temple," showing that old customs still lingered. Experts say parents should be open and honest about menstruation. Menstrual Cycle Coach Jema Lee told Hindustan Times that starting early talks about the body, answering questions sincerely, and celebrating the first period with small gifts or rituals can help girls feel confident. Preparing them with menstrual products is also key. Kangana Ranaut’s honest story reminds us that the first period can be a scary moment for many, but with love, support, and knowledge, it can also be a strong, special milestone in a girl’s life.
