Heavy Rains Wreck Bridge in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli, Cutting Off Dozens of Villages

September 1, 2025

Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district felt the full fury of nature as a motorable bridge on the busy Jyotirmath-Malari highway was swept away by heavy rains. The bridge, which connects over a dozen villages in the border area of the Niti Valley, got destroyed around 2 am on Sunday, when the seasonal Tamak stream swelled fiercely. Officials confirmed, “There is no report of any loss of life in this incident.” This dramatic event struck the area along the banks of the Dhauliganga, a strong tributary of the mighty Alaknanda river. The swollen waters gushed with such force that the bridge, a vital link for locals, could not withstand the stormy onslaught. The troubles don’t end there! The Badrinath National Highway has been shut down after heavy debris blocked two key spots—Bhanirpani and Paaglanala—between Chamoli and Jyotirmath. The district administration is on the job, removing rubble with machines to bring back smooth traffic flow. Adding to the woes, the Kund-Chamoli National Highway, the lifeline connecting Kedarnath to Chamoli, remains blocked. A fierce landslide has trapped this route near Bairagana. But don’t lose hope! Officials shared that efforts are underway to clear the road and reopen it soon. This spike in heavy rains and natural disasters is testing Uttarakhand’s resilience. Villagers await relief as authorities battle nature’s chaos to restore normal life and keep these Himalayan roads safe and sound.
