The courtroom drama is reaching its peak! On September 2, 2025, the Delhi High Court is all set to give its much-awaited verdict on the bail pleas of activists Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and several others. These accused face serious charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), connected to the shocking February 2020 riots. A bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Shalinder Kaur, after hearing heavy arguments since July 9, will announce the final decision sharp at 2:30 p.m. The accused waiting for justice include Sharjeel Imam, Umar Khalid, Mohd Saleem Khan, Shifa Ur Rehman, Athar Khan, Meeran Haider, Abdul Khalid Saifi, and Gulfisha Fatima. The prosecution isn't holding back. They claim this was no sudden flare-up but a well-planned, evil conspiracy to stir trouble and damage India’s image globally. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta boldly said, "If you do anything against your nation, you better be in jail till you are acquitted." On the other side, Sharjeel Imam’s lawyer fights back by saying he was "completely disconnected" from the violence, time, place, and even the other accused like Umar Khalid. They argue that Sharjeel’s speeches and WhatsApp chats never sparked unrest. The riots in question erupted during heated protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC), resulting in 53 tragic deaths and over 700 injuries. Sharjeel Imam was arrested on August 25, 2020, and since then, bail pleas by him and others have been pending before the high court. The police describe the February 2020 violence as a "clinical and pathological conspiracy," pointing out that speeches from Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and others mentioned sensitive topics like CAA-NRC, Babri mosque, triple talaq, and Kashmir, which increased fear among people. Delhi Police strongly opposes the bail pleas, stressing that the usual rule of 'bail is the norm, and jail the exception' should not apply here given the crime’s magnitude. They also say there is no evidence that the prosecution is delaying the trial and insist that the accused’s right to a speedy trial doesn’t mean an easy way out. All eyes will be on the Delhi High Court on September 2 to see how they handle this fiery, high-profile case involving serious charges, national interest, and activist rights.
