Mumbai is buzzing, but not in a happy way! The Maratha quota protest led by Manoj Jarange has brought the city to a grinding halt. Mumbai police have asked Jarange, the reservation campaigner, to leave Azad Maidan and told protesters to shift their stir to Kharghar in Navi Mumbai. The Bombay High Court stepped in on Monday with a stern warning. The court pointed out that Mumbai’s traffic and daily life are blocked because of the ongoing Maratha quota agitation. The situation is serious as Jarange has now refused water on day four of his hunger strike, showing his tough stand. The HC did not hold back. It said the protest has not been peaceful and that the rules set before the stir started have been broken repeatedly. The court wants peace back in Mumbai and gave Jarange and his supporters a last chance to clear all streets by Tuesday noon. It also questioned the Maharashtra government about why the roads filled with agitators, who came from all over the state, have not been cleared. The court told the government to make sure no more protesters enter the city. While the legal battle went on in the court, just a few meters away at Azad Maidan, the 43-year-old activist Jarange stood firm. He warned that if Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis does not listen to the Maratha quota demands, more than five crore Marathas will flood Mumbai. This dramatic showdown has Mumbai watching closely. The city wants its normal life back, but the Maratha community is showing strong determination to fight for their reservation rights. Will the government listen before things get hotter? Only time will tell!
