Hold on to your hats! EchoStar has just agreed to sell its wireless spectrum licenses to SpaceX for a jaw-dropping $17 billion. This is big news for the Starlink satellite internet network. Why? Because these wireless licenses are like golden tickets for 5G connections across the U.S. But wait, it’s not just about money. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) had been watching EchoStar closely. They were worried EchoStar wasn’t using its mobile-satellite service spectrum properly and might be falling behind on their 5G promises. The regulators questioned if EchoStar was meeting its duty to build out 5G in America. Things got serious enough that even President Donald Trump stepped into the spotlight, urging EchoStar and FCC Chair Brendan Carr to find a friendly solution for the future of these precious spectrum licenses. Now, under this new agreement, SpaceX will pay up to $8.5 billion in cash and add more stock worth the same amount. But that’s not all — SpaceX also agreed to cover around $2 billion in interest payments on EchoStar's debts until the end of 2027.
